On This Day… March 10th, 2020

What happened around this time in FBA’s history? See below for some pretty cool tidbits.

  • March 8, 1932: FBA honors recently retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. at its annual dinner — held on Holmes’ 91st birthday. The legendary jurist is unable to attend but sends a telegram: “At times the ambitious ends of life have made it seem to be lonely, but it has not been. You have given me the companionship of dear friends who have helped to keep alive the fire in my heart. If I could think that I had sent a spark to those who come after I should be ready to say Goodbye. — O.W. Holmes”

  • March 10, 1967: Former FBA President Ramsey Clark is sworn in as U.S. Attorney General, with the oath administered by his father, Tom C. Clark, who then resigns from the Supreme Court to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

  • March 24, 1941: FBA delegations from Washington, D.C., and New York City attend the first conference of the Inter-American Bar Association in Havana, Cuba.
